The Government today discussed forcing a General Election if MPs try to seize control of Brexit and make it softer than Theresa May's deal.

Ministers including Brexit Secretary Stephen Barclay are said to have raised the prospect at Cabinet this morning ahead of a Parliamentary votes this evening to wrestle control of the withdrawal process.

The Commons will tonight vote on a series of amendments to a Government motion that would pave the way to so-called indicative votes taking place on Wednesday.

These would allow MPs to show what sort of Brexit they wish to push through if a majority cannot be found for Mrs May's twice-defeated deal.

The talk of forcing a General Election come despite an Opinium poll from two months ago finding that only 12 per cent of Britons would welcome another one, just two years after the last resulted in a hung Parliament.

Theresa May has emphasised twice now that the Government will whip against the indicative vote amendment tonight, ie will actively seek to block MPs from conducting indicative votes on the way forward for Brexit. Staggering abdication of responsibility.

Following an emergency cabinet meeting, a senior government source said MPs led by Tory Sir Oliver Letwin “have the numbers” to pass their amendment, paving the way for indicative votes on Wednesday.

British Prime Minister Theresa May will address her Conservative lawmakers on Wednesday, possibly to announce a resignation date in a last throw of the dice to win support for her twice-rejected Brexit deal in parliament.

May was due to speak to the party’s so-called 1922 Committee at 1700 GMT on Wednesday, a lawmaker from her Conservative Party said, speaking on condition of anonymity, adding it was “certainly a possibility” she could set her date of departure.

The political editor of The Sun newspaper said May was expected to set a date for her resignation at the meeting.

DUP MP Jim Shannon said it was beginning to look like the Eurosceptic ERG group, led by Mr Rees-Mogg, were more focused on Brexit than the Union.

Speaking on BBC Radio 4's Today programme on Tuesday morning Mr Shannon said it appeared that some ERG members had changed their stance.
