Official: Chinese vaccines’ effectiveness low
 
In a rare admission of the weakness of Chinese coronavirus vaccines, the country’s top disease control official says their effectiveness is low and the government is considering mixing them to give them a boost.
Chinese vaccines “don’t have very high protection rates,” said the director of the China Centers for Disease Control, Gao Fu, at a conference Saturday in the southwestern city of Chengdu.
Beijing has distributed hundreds of millions of doses in other countries while also trying to promote doubt about the effectiveness of Western vaccines.
“It’s now under formal consideration whether we should use different vaccines from different technical lines for the immunization process,” Gao said.
The effectiveness rate of a coronavirus vaccine from Sinovac, a Chinese developer, at preventing symptomatic infections has been found to be as low as 50.4% by researchers in Brazil. By comparison, the vaccine made by Pfizer has been found to be 97% effective.
Beijing has yet to approve any foreign vaccines for use in China, where the coronavirus emerged in late 2019.
Gao gave no details of possible changes in strategy but mentioned mRNA, a previously experimental technique used by Western vaccine developers while China’s drug makers used traditional technology.
“Everyone should consider the benefits mRNA vaccines can bring for humanity,” Gao said. “We must follow it carefully and not ignore it just because we already have several types of vaccines already.”
Gao previously raised questions about the safety of mRNA vaccines. He was quoted by the official Xinhua News Agency as saying in December he couldn’t rule out negative side effects because they were being used for the first time on healthy people.
Chinese state media and popular health and science blogs also have questioned the safety and effectiveness of the Pfizer vaccine, which uses mRNA.
As of April 2, some 34 million people have received both of the two doses required by Chinese vaccines and about 65 million received one, according to Gao.
Experts say mixing vaccines, or sequential immunization, might boost effectiveness rates. Trials around the world are looking at mixing of vaccines or giving a booster shot after a longer time period. Researchers in Britain are studying a possible combination of Pfizer and AstraZeneca vaccines.

Britain will achieve Covid ‘herd immunity’ on Monday, according to a UCL model

The UK is expected to pass the threshold for herd immunity by Monday, according to experts at University College London.

Dynamic modelling suggests that the number of people who are protected against Covid-19, either because they are naturally immune or have received a vaccine, will hit 73.4 per cent on April 12.

Figures published by the Office for National Statistics last week - based on antibody testing - show that around 54 per cent had antibodies by March 14.

Since then, a further 7.1 million people have received a first jab, while nearly 100,000 more people have tested positive for Covid-19.

In addition to this around 10 per cent of the population is naturally immune, either through exposure to other coronaviruses or because they have T-cells, which would not be picked up in antibody testing.

Professor Karl Friston, from UCL, said: “The herd immunity estimates surprised me. However, they are unremarkable when one considers that over 50 per cent of adults have been vaccinated, around 42 per cent of people have now been exposed to the virus and about 10 per cent have pre-existing immunity.

“When factoring in the estimated efficacy of vaccination in terms of sterilising immunity, this – according to the model – means about 70 per cent of the population are immune.

“Based upon contact rates at the beginning of the pandemic and estimated transmission risk, this is nearly at the herd immunity threshold.”

The data, seen exclusively by the Daily Telegraph, is in stark contrast to modelling published earlier this week by Imperial College London, which suggested only 34 per cent of the population was immune by the end of March.

UCL’s work is different to other models because it reacts to real-time deaths, infections, vaccinations, vaccine effectiveness data and Google mobility trends with inform transmission trends, the paper reported.

The university also predicted that the threshold level needed for herd immunity will drop dramatically in the next couple of months with the UK needing just 40 per cent protection by the middle of the summer to be safe.

The study comes just over a week after lockdown restrictions were eased to allow people from 6 households to mix outside.

On Monday they will be eased further, with non-essential shops, gyms and leisure centres reopening for the first time in months.

Pubs and restaurants will also be able to serve meals outdoors.

Latest figures show 31.7 million people have been vaccinated, with 5,683,509 receiving a second jab.
