Left-wing politicians Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders are reportedly set to be frozen out of president-elect Joe Biden's cabinet amid concerns the party could lose more seats in upcoming elections.

Democrats clung onto their House majority but lost five seats while Republicans picked up six and secured their majority in the Senate, barring a major upset in Georgia's runoff election.

Each side of the party is blaming the other for the poor results, which came after four years of White House chaos under Donald Trump. Left-wing Democrats say the party's offer on progressive causes was not strong enough.

Meanwhile, centrist Democrats say the left's 'socialist' messaging puts off Americans living outside big cities and urban areas.

Anger has been fomenting within the party in recent days and centrist Democrats say that with Mitch McConnell remaining as Senate majority leader, the party can not afford to appoint figures viewed as socialists.

And those sitting in the upper chamber privately acknowledge that Mr Sanders, Vermont senator, who is registered as an Independent, and left-wing Democrat Elizabeth Warren, Massachusetts senator, have been ruled out of filling top cabinet spots, according to Politico.

"The Biden administration has to be a lot more sensitive of where you come from if you’re looking at members of Congress,” Gerry Connolly, representative for Virginia's 11th congressional district told the publication. “We cannot afford to put any seats in jeopardy.”

House Democrats, weary of their small advantage, are reluctant to bet on a competitive election next year, which could slash their majority even further.

President-elect Biden has suggested he could name a few cabinet nominees before Thanksgiving as he presses ahead with his transition plans, despite the outgoing president refusing to admit defeat.

Delaware senator and long-time Biden ally Chris Coons is rumoured to be among the favourites to take the secretary of state job, the top role within the cabinet. But he has so far remained coy on his chances.

Senator Coons is viewed by Biden as someone who can reach across the floor and get business done, a skill set that could prove vital to the incoming administration.

“If he surprises me by asking me to consider serving in his Cabinet, I’d be honoured to do so," senator Coons said in response to the speculation. "But I could also understand how he might say, ‘Look, we’re at a moment where folks who can deliver on bipartisanship in the Senate are at a premium, and I need you to stay there.’"

Meanwhile, Mr Biden has vowed to press ahead with getting "right to work" and downplayed the outgoing president's refusal to face the inevitable.

He described Mr Trump's position as little more than an "embarrassing" mark on his legacy, while predicting that Republicans on Capitol Hill would eventually accept the reality of Biden's victory. The Republican resistance, Mr Biden said, "does not change the dynamic at all in what we're able to do".

Additional intelligence briefings "would be useful," he added, but "we don't see anything slowing us down".

The measured comments come as Mr Biden prepares to confront duelling national crises that actively threaten the health, safety and economic security of millions of Americans irrespective of the political debate.

Coronavirus infections, hospitalisations and deaths are surging, the economy faces the prospect of long-term damage, and the nation's political and cultural divides may be worsening.

Once again Black voters — and particularly Black women — came out to elect a moderate Democrat, because they understand the art of the possible.
“Black voters have a PhD in white people.”


That was the lesson, Erika Wilson, a law professor at the University of North Carolina, said white Democrats need to take from the 2020 election.
In the Democratic primaries, Black voters backed Joe Biden as their candidate, even after the former vice president suffered big defeats in the largely white Iowa and New Hampshire contests. In the South Carolina primary, where Black people made up nearly two-thirds of the electorate, Biden won every county in the state and nearly half the vote in a five-person race. His closest rival, Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, got less than 20%. While many from the progressive wing of the Democratic Party chided those voters as conservatives who came out against the agendas of progressives candidates Sanders and Elizabeth Warren, Wilson said what it showed was craftiness among Black voters.

In the aftermath of the election, BuzzFeed News spoke to Black voters who welcomed Biden’s victory but questioned Democrats' commitment to racial justice.
Black people, Wilson said, had long concluded that only Biden could defeat Trump. They didn’t all turn to Biden because they liked his centrist approach, his history on race, or because he served as vice president to the nation’s first Black president. Black voters acted strategically, she said. They used their doctorates in whiteness to ascertain which candidate would appeal to just enough white voters while still hopefully acknowledging the debt owed to Black people. Simply put, when standing in the polling booth, Black voters don’t have the luxury to vote for their dream candidate. Wilson said that while many white liberals are now celebrating the defeat of racism, she doesn’t think they’re ready to truly confront white supremacy.


“Black voters are masters in acting defensively,” Wilson said. “There was a lot of consternation by the more progressive wing of the Democratic Party when the Black voters of South Carolina rejected Bernie and breathed life into Biden’s campaign...I'd consider myself much further to the left and Biden wouldn’t have been my preferred candidate, but I think it showed that the Black voters have a...sort of understanding of how to navigate and survive a system of white supremacy."

“When it comes to doing the hard work of upending systems of oppression and subordination that impact Black people, there’s not an appetite for that,” said Wilson, who teaches courses on critical race theory. “But there is an appetite to go back to the days where the president wasn’t openly cavorting with white supremacists.”
White people hate the idea of being called racist more than they hate racism, she concluded.
“There was a reputational harm to white folks, generally, to feel like they are associated with that. Now they can feel good that the narrative might be that they chose another direction.”

Many conclude that black voters’ liberal preferences, carried over from economic and racially progressive policies of the civil rights movement and Jesse Jackson’s presidential campaigns of 1984 and 1988, led this shift.

But black voters’ support of Democratic candidates is a function of electoral pragmatism — voting in a risk-averse fashion to preserve gains, instead of ideologically in hopes of immediate transformative change — not devotion to left-wing ideology. In surveys, more than half of black Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents prefer a public option for health care over Medicare-for-all, and two-thirds of black Americans favor charter schools and choice programs, which stray from party orthodoxy.

Only 28 percent of black Democrats consider themselves liberal, according to the Pew Research Center, while 70 percent identify as moderate or conservative. And black liberal Democrats constitute just 17 percent of the left wing of the party, Gallup found.
