Even taking into account the possibility that social desirability bias might have increased since the invasion, and could therefore explain part of the rise, I think it's safe to assume that it's pretty clear that Putin's decision enjoys massive support in Russia.

Russian President Vladimir Putin stated this afternoon in a telephone conversation, which came about at his request, that he would enact a law according to which gas deliveries would have to be settled in rubles as of April 1. At the same time, he stressed in the conversation that nothing would change for the European contract partners. Payments would continue to be made exclusively in euros and transferred as usual to Gazprom Bank, which is not affected by the sanctions. The bank would then convert the money into rubles. Chancellor Scholz did NOT agree to this procedure in the conversation, but only asked for written information to understand the procedure in more detail. It remains that the G7 agreement applies: energy deliveries are paid exclusively in euros or dollars. Just as the treaties stipulate.

Russian President Vladimir Putin had a telephone conversation with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, the Kremlin press service said.
"Vladimir Putin informed the Federal Chancellor on the substance of the decision to switch to the payment for gas supplied, in particular, to the Federal Republic of Germany, in Russian rubles. Changes in the settlement procedure are introduced due to the fact that, in violation of international law, the currency reserves of the Bank of Russia have been frozen by EU member states. It is noted that the adopted decision should not lead to worsening of contractual conditions for European companies-importers of Russian gas. It is agreed that experts of the two countries will further negotiate on this issue," the report said.
Putin and Scholz also exchanged views on the latest round of talks between Russian and Ukrainian representatives held the day before in Istanbul.
Russian President Vladimir Putin said earlier that payments for Russian gas exports to "unfriendly" countries would be converted to Russian rubles. He instructed the Central Bank and the government to determine in a week the procedure for buyers of Russian gas to buy rubles on the domestic market. Putin's instruction to the government, the Central Bank and Gazprom on measures to translate payments for gas supplies to unfriendly countries into rubles must be executed by March 31.
