President Donald Trump’s former campaign manager Paul Manafort has been sentenced to 47 months in prison, following his conviction last year for tax and bank fraud.

The sentence of just under four years in jail was much more lenient than the term set out in federal guidelines which prosecutors had highlighted, calling for between 19.5 and 24 years behind bars.

But US District Judge T.S.Ellis described the guidelines as “excessive” and “way out of whack”. He did, however, order the 69-year-old to pay a fine of $50,000 (€44,650) and $24 million (€21.43 million) in restitution.

Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., is an outspoken critic of President Trump. But she’s also critical of his predecessor, former President Barack Obama.

“We can’t be only upset with Trump,” Omar told Politico for a profile that was published Friday. “His policies are bad, but many of the people who came before him also had really bad policies. They just were more polished than he was. “That’s not what we should be looking for anymore,” she continued. “We don’t want anybody to get away with murder because they are polished. We want to recognize the actual policies that are behind the pretty face and the smile.”

Omar, a Muslim and a Somali refugee who wears Islamic dress in public, noted the “caging of kids” at the U.S.-Mexico border and the “droning of countries around the world” — for which Trump has been criticized — happened on Obama’s watch too. Obama’s office did not immediately return a request for comment.

Obama was widely criticized for expanding the use of armed drones, authorizing at least 542 strikes during his presidency that caused an estimated 3,797 deaths, including 324 civilians, according to data from the Council on Foreign Relations.

Yet Trump’s drone program was even more active than Obama’s in his first two years as commander in chief. According to U.S. government data released last November, Trump authorized 238 drone strikes in Pakistan, Somalia and Yemen, compared with 186 authorized by Obama during his first two years in office. It’s unclear how many civilians were killed in drone strikes authorized by Trump.

On Wednesday, Trump revoked an Obama-era order that required the intelligence community to publicly report the number of CIA drone strikes outside of war zones and the number of civilians killed by them.

And Trump has been harshly criticized on both sides of the aisle for his administration’s zero tolerance illegal immigration policy that has resulted in thousands of children being separated from their families at the U.S.-Mexico border. Many of the children separated from their families were held in detention centers. In one such facility, hundreds of children were seen in a series of enclosures made of metal fencing, which have also been characterized as cages.

During the Bush and Obama administrations, immigrants caught crossing the border with children were largely treated as civil rather than criminal cases. Under Obama, parents were removed from their children if they were arrested on other charges or had an outstanding warrant — resulting in some children being held in detention centers. But the number of such cases was small compared to the number under Trump.

Meanwhile, Omar has come under fire for comments that critics construed as anti-Semitic. On Thursday, the House passed a broad resolution condemning hate that originated from her remarks.

Spanish intelligence officials believe at least two of the 10 attackers who broke into the North Korean embassy in Madrid last month, holding staff hostage and making off with computers, are linked to the CIA, according to a report in El País.

Police and Spain’s national intelligence centre (CNI) are investigating the unusual robbery, which took place on 22 February in the west of the capital.

The online newspaper El Confidencial, which broke the news of the raid, reported that the group of men tied up and threatened staff, fleeing only after a woman managed to free herself and raise the alarm.

Through an interpreter, she told the police: “A group of men came into the embassy and has gagged the staff.”

El Confidencial said a police officer dispatched to the embassy was told everything was fine by a man who answered the door, but moments later, “the gates swung open … and two high-end cars came out at great speed, leaving the area within seconds”.

On Wednesday, El País said Spanish investigators had studied CCTV footage of the intruders, questioned embassy staff and examined the cars used in the getaway.

“Although most of the [attackers] were Korean, at least two of them have been identified by Spanish intelligence services as having links to the US CIA,” it said.

The paper said the Spanish authorities had raised the matter with the CIA, which had denied involvement “but not in a very convincing manner”.

El País pointed out the robbery took place five days before Donald Trump’s second summit with the North Korean leader, Kim Jong-un.

It suggested the intruders could have been looking for information relating to Kim’s chief negotiator, Kim Hyok Chol, who served as ambassador to Spain before being expelled in September 2017.

(CNN)Sen. Amy Klobuchar's nascent presidential campaign has been dogged by allegations that the Minnesota Democrat mistreated her Senate staff. In an interview with CNN's Poppy Harlow on Thursday, the senator admitted she "can always do better" with her staff, but said her toughness would be an asset on the world stage.

She added: "One can always do better, and that means you want to be sure that you are listening to people if they felt that something was unfair, or they felt bad about something. But I still think that you have to demand good product. When you're out there on the world stage and dealing with people like Vladimir Putin, yeah, you want someone who's tough. You want someone that demands the answers and that's going to get things done, and that's what I've done my whole life."

Former staffers -- nearly all anonymously -- have accused Klobuchar of creating a hostile work environment during her years in the Senate. Some have complained about how her office handled human resources issues, including paid family leave, where Klobuchar's office required employees who took 12 weeks of paid maternity and paternity leave to stay at the office for three times that time off once they returned. That policy has since been scrapped.
