And Will's father stood up, stuffed his pipe with tobacco, rummaged his pockets for matches, brought out a battered harmonica, a penknife, a cigarette lighter that wouldn't work, and a memo pad he had always meant to write some great thoughts down on but never got around to, and lined up these weapons for a pygmy war that could be lost before it even started

Satellite images recently captured by Maxar Technologies show that Russia is continuing to deploy new troops and military equipment, likely including field hospitals, near Ukraine's borders in Crimea, Belarus and western Russia.

According to the Vienna Document, Russia needs to provide detailed explanation on the objectives, precise location and dates of completion of its military activities, as well as designation, subordination, number and types of formations, as well as types of equipment involved 2/4

Sad se radi onaj manji interkonektor na liniji Niš - Sofija, koji će biti nakačen na grčki Aleksandropulos i TNG stanicu tamo (a to kasni nekoliko godina).

A curious moment when the consensus opinion as to what is going on seems to be more or less the same among experts in Ukraine and Russia.

If Russia attacks, the US says we told you so. If Russia doesn't, the US says we stopped them. Not exactly 3D chess.

Re: Rat u Ukrajini
On 30 November 1991, Bush finally reached Gorbachev by telephone to
explain his stance. The United States, he affirmed, would not recognize Ukraine
until its leadership fulfilled the conditions on nuclear weapons, implementation
of Soviet treaties, and on human rights. Gorbachev said he would refuse to take
the vote for Ukraine’s independence as the right to secede. Otherwise, he
warned, a conflict between Ukraine and Russia could arise that would be worse
than Yugoslavia. Yeltsin had “forces” in his camp who wanted to claim Crimea
and Donbass for Russia. At this point Baker cut in: “Yes, yes, this is very
dangerous.” Bush also expressed empathy: “I am under a little pressure at home.
I can’t understand what you have been through, but people are piling up on me.”
American “delayed recognition” of Ukraine, he argued unconvincingly, might
even help to bring Ukraine back to the idea of a new union by allaying nationalist
concerns.

Re: Rat u Ukrajini
Yeltsin seemed to be having second thoughts as well. On 26 August, his press
secretary Pavel Voshchanov issued at Yeltsin’s request a declaration to the media:
“The Russian Federation casts no doubt on the constitutional right of every
state and people to self-determination. There exists, however, the problem of
borders, the non-settlement of which is possible and admissible only on condition
of allied relations secured by an appropriate treaty. In the event of their
termination, the RSFSR reserves the right to raise the question of the revision of
boundaries. This refers to all neighboring republics, with the exception of the
three Baltic republics.”
The declaration was aimed above all at the Ukrainians. It reflected the
strong influence of Alexander Solzhenitsyn: the nationalist writer had decried
the decisions of the Bolshevik dictatorship to transfer “historic Russian
lands” to the Ukrainian Soviet republic as a divide-and-conquer ploy. Vladimir
Lukin in Yeltsin’s entourage strongly believed that the borders of the Russian
Federation, Ukraine, and Kazakhstan “were the products of the Bolsheviks’
cynical manipulation of nationalism in order to construct their totalitarian
empire.” Internationally monitored referendums, Lukin argued, should be
called to allow these areas to decide whether they wanted to become part of a
new democratic Russia or stay as they were. The territories in question were
Crimea and the Donbass region.
At a round-table discussion in Moscow, Alexander Tsypko, a political scientist
with Ukrainian roots, argued that this declaration could lead to a war with
the two Slavic republics. It would be, he warned, worse than the conflict between
Serbia and Croatia in the collapsing Yugoslavia. The only way to keep the peace
would be to recognize the current borders of Ukraine. Lukin objected: “And
what would remain [of Russia] after everybody took what they considered
necessary?” He rejected the analogy with Yugoslavia. The Soviet Army was still
under Moscow’s control. Yeltsin should quietly, but firmly, use economic pressure
to force Ukraine to return Crimea, where the majority of the population
were ethnic Russians. The Ukrainian leaders, he concluded, “would have enough
brains to understand that they cannot operate without Russia.”
