The accusation of misogyny and racism had always hanging over Carnivore. It seems people never got the Steele’s extremely black humor, but it seems sometimes he was not kidding too! How did you tackle this part of the myth ?
This is complicated, as was Peter Steele himself. It cannot be easily explained or answered, and I guess that’s why the book is 300 pages long. There are so many facets to this guy’s music and personality.
Peter was not misogynistic or racist. However, he did hate a large portion of mankind, and often seemed to hate himself. But I believe he directed his hatred toward people he felt deserved it. But then he was also into creating a fantasy world to escape into and write music for, as on Type O Negative’s first album, Slow, Deep and Hard, where a lot of these accusations stemmed from. And don’t forget that he didn’t like certain socialistic policies of the US government, such as the welfare system, and he particularly disliked the many people who used it as a crutch, as an excuse to do nothing with their lives. And he certainly has a right to that opinion. Lots of non-white people were taking advantage of that system too, and Peter knew that. He never turned it into a “black” issue or anything like that. He despised lazy, unintelligent, good-for-nothing white people just as much as anyone else. And then, if you add in Peter’s excellent, caustic, sharp sense of humor, and if you also consider that he loved to play devil’s advocate and stir up the pot and watch it boil over, then you get songs like “Der Untermensch,” “Race War,” “Prelude to Agony” and “Male Supremacy.” But racist and misogynist in real life? Definitely not.

"Fly away, little Starling, fly, fly away"

Jef Costello's rather eccentric piece over at Counter Currents,
Swatting Flies:Reflections on Men & Murder
led me to some idiosyncratic reflexions of my own, including a stroll down my own disturbing little Memory Lane.
It all started with this quote from Mark Dyal:

“It is heartwarming to watch the facial and body language of every man that picks up a bladed weapon. They are instantly transformed, not in thinking, ‘boy, it would be nice to slice some cheese with this,’ but instead, ‘this would look great buried in someone’s ribs.’ Something primordial is reawakened, if only for an instant, but it is there.”

I’ve met with a surprisingly large number of MTF transgendered folks in the heavy metal community (well, glam/metal), mostly from Minnesota or upstate New York, all of fine Nordic stock. Tall, some over 6'- 6", blonde, dolichocephalic.

They mostly seem be be guitarists, lead guitarists at that, and no matter how “female identified” they profess to be, the one “male” personality aspect they retain [apart from an interest in metal, of course] is an obsession with guitars – playing, collecting, fixing, ultimately building their own to get them ‘just right’. I suspect the latter is connected with the whole reconstruction thing. But no matter how high the heels and how bright the glitter, give them a guitar and they suddenly become teenage boys again.

   
Bringing together transsexuals, weapons, heavy metal, Minnesota, White folks, serial killers, “strange children” and flying insects inevitably calls to mind this exchange:

Lecter: The significance of the moth is change. Caterpillar into chrysalis or pupa. From thence into beauty. Our Billy wants to change too.

Clarice: (puzzled) There’s no correlation in the literature between trans-sexualism and violence. Trans-sexuals are very passive.

Lecter: Clever girl. You’re so close to the way you’re gonna catch him. Do you realize that?

Clarice: No, tell me why.

Lecter: There are three major centers for trans-sexual surgery: Johns Hopkins, the University of Minnesota, and Columbus Medical Center. I wouldn’t be surprised if Billy had applied for sex reassignment at one or all of them, and been rejected.

Clarice: On what basis would they reject him?

 Lecter: Look for severe childhood disturbances associated with violence. Our Billy wasn’t born a criminal, Clarice. He was made one through years of systematic abuse. Billy hates his own identity, you see, and he thinks that makes him a trans-sexual. But his pathology is a thousand times more savage and more terrifying.

Who on Earth told Starling that transsexuals were "passive"?  Obviously "that awful Jack Crawford" as Hannibal says.  Obviously, she's never met one of these Wild Boys!


Even the "straight" boys get into the act:

The Occupation-haters share their disdain for the People, though they are willing to be paid to pose as the People’s Tribunes; they love the Big Money—the 1%—who pay for their hypocrisy, and since Big Money already calls the shots, they don’t need no stinking revolution anyway.
