Live: Macron outlines plan to fight ‘Islamist separatism’ in France


French President Emmanuel Macron has said his government will unveil a proposed law to fight "Islamist separatism" later this year, a particularly sensitive issue in a country strongly attached to secularism.

In a speech in the Paris region, the French president detailed plans for a law to fight what he identifies as the favouring of religious laws over France's republican, secular values – a stance he calls "separatism".

Macron described Islam as "a religion that is in crisis all over the world today" as he made a keenly-awaited keynote address on battling Islamic radicalism in France.

The French president said Islam was in crisis due to "an extreme hardening" of positions. He announced the government would present a draft law in December aimed at strengthening secularism in France, against what he described as "Islamist separatism" in the country.

Macron's speech in Les Mureaux comes more than seven months after he announced that his government sought to combat "foreign interference" in the practice of Islam by ending a programme that allowed countries to send imams and teachers to France.  

“A problem arises when, in the name of religion, some want to separate themselves from the Republic and therefore not respect its laws,” Macron said in a February 18 speech in the eastern French city of Mulhouse.

French Muslims must be pretty flattered that in a middle of global pandemic and even a European Council, Emmanuel Macron has taken the time out to tell them all how they should stop becoming Islamist separatists.

Macron says "Islam is a religion which is experiencing a crisis throughout the world". I'm  waiting for him to call us a brain-dead  #Separatisme

There doesn't seem to be much behind Macron's anti-separatism bill which makes his decision to stand up and make the country's Muslims a target a suspicion for their everyday activity (school, work) an  even more cycnical and desperate attempt to court the far-right

Macron wants to centralise Islam with state approved imams, institutions, and texts. If he succeeds, it would make France the rightful heir to the Ottoman Empire and the first Caliphate in western Europe. He will succeed where the Muslim Brotherhood failed. I'm living for it tbh

The suspected attacker was spotted by a police patrol while carrying a knife a short distance from the scene of the attack. Officers shot the suspect dead, according to a police spokesman.

According to police sources, the victim was a history teacher who had recently discussed caricatures of the Prophet Mohammed in class.

Police also said that witnesses had heard the attacker shout "Allahu Akbar", or "God is Great".

The grisly murder was an attack on the French nation as a whole, Education Minister Jean-Michel Blanquer said on Twitter.

"Our unity and our resolve are the only responses faced with the monstrosity of Islamist terrorism," the minister wrote.

Last month, a 25-year old Pakistani man attacked two people with a meat cleaver over the publication of caricatures of the Prophet Mohammed by the satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo.

The attacker seriously injured two employees of a TV production agency, whose offices are on the same block that used to house Charlie Hebdo. Both survived.

That attack came three weeks into an ongoing trial of suspected accomplices of the authors of the January 2015 attacks on Charlie Hebdo and a Jewish supermarket, which also saw a policewoman gunned down in the street.

The victim, Samuel Paty, is a 47-year-old professor who has been teaching history-geography and moral and civic education at a local college for the past five years, the "Bois-d'Aulne" college.

The previous week, one of his courses had caused a great deal of controversy. The professor was the subject of a complaint as well as various threats on social networks after he used the cartoons of Mohammed in a 5th and 4th grade class on freedom of expression which is a theme in the curriculum.

According to school officials, the teacher reportedly signaled his intention to discuss the cartoons and asked students who did not wish to see the cartoons to leave the classroom momentarily. It seems that during this lesson, the teacher suggested to his Muslim students that they go outside or turn their heads away to preserve them, "so as not to be offended, not to be shocked" by the images of Mohammed, according to the testimony of a student's parent.

Some parents of students reacted strongly, notably via a widely distributed video on YouTube published by one of them, which called for his dismissal from the National Education system. In response, the teacher himself filed a defamation complaint and was accompanied to the police station by the school principal.
