While there was no indication Puigdemont was hoping to come to Belgium, the country is one of few members of the European Union where EU citizens can ask for political asylum.

"It is not unrealistic if you look at the situation," Belgium's migration minister, Theo Francken, told Belgian broadcaster VTM.

"They are already talking about a prison sentence," Francken, a member of Flemish nationalist party N-VA, said. "The question is to what extent he would get a fair trial."

    Barcelona, Spain (CNN)
Hundreds of thousands of anti-independence protesters rallied in the Catalan capital of Barcelona on Sunday after Madrid took unprecedented measures to quash the region's bid to split from Spain.

The protest comes as tensions spiked following the Catalan Parliament's vote Friday to declare unilateral independence.

In a sea of red-and-yellow Spanish and Catalan flags, protesters marched down Barcelona's Passeig de Gràcia shopping strip, some chanting for the imprisonment of deposed Catalan leader Carles Puigdemont, who led the divisive independence drive. Barcelona police say around 300,000 people attended.

Violence erupts in Barcelona as Nazi-saluting fascists chant 'Viva Franco' and clash with police during million-strong pro-union protest demanding Catalan's deposed president is locked up

    - Crowds draped in Spanish flags and singing, 'Viva España’, demanded Carles Puigdemont is sent to prison
    - Belgium has weighed in on the debate and said it might grant Puigdemont asylum if Spain threaten to arrest
    - Catalan independence parties appear to be losing their parliamentary majority ahead of December's election
    - Thousands were chanting, ‘this time we are going to vote,’ declaring intentions to hit the ballot box on the 21st

    PUBLISHED: 09:29 GMT, 29 October 2017 | UPDATED: 17:28 GMT, 29 October 2017

Violence has broken out on the streets of Barcelona as Nazi-saluting fascists draped in Spanish flags clashed with Catalan police wielding batons.

Spanish officials organised a unionist march through central Barcelona today in which they claimed more than a million people took part to resoundingly reject Catalonia’s declaration of independence.

During the protests in Barcelona, men can be seen lashing out at line of police officers and a second video from Madrid shows dozens of protesters gathered in a group and making Nazi salutes.

The crowds chanted that Carles Puigdemont, the sacked Catalan leader, should be sent to prison for declaring independence.

Other videos show gangs chanting 'Viva Franco' - a nod to Spain's former dictator General Francisco Franco.

Protesters also shouted obscenities about Catalan journalists, who they accuse of twisting the facts and selling fake news.

Thousands were chanting, ‘this time we are going to vote,’ declaring their intention to make their presence felt at the ballot box on 21 December rather than boycott the poll, as they did during the October 1 referendum.

Meanwhile, Catalan independence parties appear to be losing their parliamentary majority ahead of December's election, according to a poll published this morning.

The poll was taken from last Monday to Thursday, just as Spain's central government was preparing to take control of the region, which then made a unilateral declaration of independence on Friday.

Pro-independence parties were seen as taking 42.5 percent of the vote while anti-independence parties would win 43.4 percent, according to the poll of some 1,000 people surveyed by Sigma Dos and published in the anti-independence newspaper El Mundo.

The wafer-thin margin between the two sides predicts a hard-fought campaign to December's ballot.
Senior Spanish politicians led today's protest, including Albert Rivera, a congressman from Madrid, alongside the leaders of all the Catalan unionist parties.

Officials who organised the huge unionist demonstration in Barcelona today declared that the total number of people attending the rally was 1.3million, though there is no official figure.
Organisers said the goal of Sunday's march's was to defend Spain's unity and reject 'an unprecedented attack in the history of democracy'.

Leaders of rival pro-union parties from the ruling conservatives, the pro-business liberals and the socialists joined together under the slogan 'We are all Catalonia. Common sense for co-existence!'

Grassroots group Societat Civil Catalan called for those who oppose Catalonia breaking away to march at noon. Demonstrators, many waving Spanish, Catalan and European Union flags, flooded a central boulevard.
Societat Civil Catalana president Alex Ramos said: 'We have organised ourselves late, but we are here to show that there is a majority of Catalans that are no longer silent and that no longer want to be silenced.'

Madrid today ordered the Catalan police to remove all portraits of sacked president Puigdemont from their police stations.

It comes as the Spanish central government continues its crackdown on the region.

We are monitoring the developments in Spain with concern, and we hope to see peaceful and democratic dialogue restored as soon as possible.

Greece supports Spain’s territorial integrity and rejects unilateral actions that undermine the country’s unity and the immutability of borders.

EU’s united front on Catalonia disguises a weak link or two
Separatists look to ex-Yugoslavia for inspiration but the differences are big

10 hours ago by Tony Barber Overwhelmingly, national governments across Europe display little or no enthusiasm for the cause of Catalan independence. They want Spain’s leaders to exercise restraint in handling the separatist challenge. However, governments in Berlin, Paris, London and elsewhere do not wish Spain to break up or think that the secessionists have legal or political grounds to do so. On closer inspection, the EU’s united front disguises a weak link or two. Take the former Yugoslav republic of Slovenia. As Catalan secessionists pushed forward with their campaign, vocal expressions of sympathy for the separatists have come from Slovenia. “Many Slovenian hearts beat for the Catalan people,” said Borut Pahor, Slovenia’s president, on October 1, the day of the chaotic referendum on independence that Madrid declared illegal. The Slovenes’ emotional bond with Catalan separatists is understandable. Only 26 years ago, their own land broke free from communist Yugoslavia and won full independence for the first time in its history. The Slovenes draw parallels between their experience as a small nation, living under what they saw as Serb domination of the Yugoslav federation, and that of the Catalans, chafing under the supremacy of Madrid. Catalonia’s separatists think along similar lines. Carles Puigdemont, leader of the regional government, visited Slovenia in 1991. He admired the peaceful, democratic methods which the Slovenes had used to achieve their goals. Just as George Orwell immortalised Mr Puigdemont’s region in his 1938 book about the Spanish Civil War, Homage to Catalonia, so Mr Puigdemont has been paying homage to Slovenia. Arguably, however, there are more differences than similarities between the cases of Slovenia and Catalonia. In 1989 pro-independence politicians amended Slovenia’s constitution, emphasising the right of national self-determination. In April 1990 they staged free, multi-party elections. In December 1990 they held a referendum on independence. The vote in favour and turnout were above 90 per cent. In June 1991 Slovenia declared independence. After a struggle against the Yugoslav army known as the Ten-Day War, Slovenia was home and dry. In Catalonia, the population is nowhere near as united behind independence as the Slovenes were. In the October 1 vote, 90 per cent voted for secession from Spain, but the turnout was a mere 43 per cent. Voters opposed to independence boycotted the referendum. Moreover, Slovenia in 1989-91 was a compact territory inhabited almost entirely by Slovenes. There was only a small Serb minority. Slovenia had no contiguous border with Serbia. This distinguished Slovenia from Croatia and Bosnia-Herzegovina, whose Serb populations, backed by neighbouring Serbia, fought the Croats and Bosniaks (Bosnian Muslims) in wars that lasted from 1991 to 1995.

Catalonia lacks Slovenia’s compactness. According to a 2013 Catalan government census, about 46 per cent of the region’s people speak Spanish as their main language, against 36 per cent who use Catalan and 12 per cent who speak both equally. It is clear that a majority of the Spanish-speakers wish to remain part of Spain. Another difference concerns leadership. Mariano Rajoy, Spain’s prime minister, can be faulted for an overlegalistic and heavy-handed approach to the Catalan crisis. But he is not Francisco Franco, Spain’s former dictator, and he is not Slobodan Milosevic, the Serbian strongman of the late 20th century, either. Spain is a democracy. Communist Yugoslavia was acquiring democratic features towards the end of its existence, but more at the level of its republics, especially Slovenia, than at the centre. Perhaps the biggest difference is that, like Greece in the 1820s and Italy in 1860, Slovenia’s bid for independence attracted the support of powerful foreign governments. Catalonia, like Iraqi Kurdistan, does not have such support.

Carles Puigdemont, the self-styled “president of the Catalan Republic,” failed to show his face at the government’s headquarters on Monday as Spanish officials tightened their grip on the rebel region.

A few ousted Catalan officials posted pictures on social media of their arrival at work in a show of defiance after being fired by the Spanish government on Friday. Puigdemont posted an undated picture from inside the regional government headquarters on Instagram but made no public appearance as reporters swarmed around his office.
