Jeffrey Gettleman, šef biroa The NY Timesa za Južnu Aziju, u intervjuu za N1 iz New Delhija kaže kako ga situacija u Indiji u ovom trenutku podsjeća na ratnu zonu.
“Čini se kao ratna na više načina jer živite pod statusom opsade, ne izlazi se vani, ljudi se boje izaći vani, boje se napustiti svoje domove. Tu je taj nevidljivi neprijatelj koji vreba stanovnike i lijevo i desno. Mnogi umiru, okruženi smo slikama ljudi koji umiru. Imam prijatelje koji su izgubili voljene, prijatelje koji su bili veoma bolesni, skoro da su život izgubili zbog ovog virusa. Bijega nema. Kada ujutro ustanem, prva stvar koju uradim jeste da otvorim klizna staklena vrata i izađem na maleni balkon mog stana u New Delhiju, a prvi miris koji me obuzme jeste miris dima. To je miris koji gradom putuje, od tog velikog broja kremacija koje se odvijaju, širom Delhija i Indije. Toliko ljudi umire i kremirani su, da ogromni oblaci dima putuju našim gradovima i truju zrak. To samo povećava zabrinutost, strah, osim toga što živite u nečem vrlo tužnom, tragičnom, opasnom. A pravog izlaza nema”, kaže Gettleman koji je ranije izvještavao iz ratova u Iraku i Africi.

I to samo onih meseci kad je korona bila u naletu.

Gde li su onda Australiji svi ti silni pomrli zbog depresije i posledičnog narušavanja zdravlja usled strogog lockdowna?

In an article published in the open-access journal BMJ, Heuveline and Michael Tzen, a UCLA statistician, considered how those figures are affecting the average lifespan for people in the U.S. and around the world.

They estimate that in the U.S., life expectancy — how long a person born today is projected to live, based on current death rates — has now dropped by almost two years. The U.S. declared a public health emergency related to the coronavirus in February 2020. Prior to that month, the nation’s life expectancy was 78.8 years.

Since then, the paper found, life expectancy has dropped by at least 1.7 years, to 77.1 years.

“This is the United States’ largest decline in annual life expectancy since World War II,” Heuveline said, adding that Americans who have died of COVID-19 lost an average of 12 years from their expected lifespans.

With 146,000 deaths due to COVID-19 in the UK, up to 1.5 million potential years of life have been lost, with those who died losing up to 10 years of life on average. Almost three quarters of those who died were aged over 75, with people in this age group losing an average 6.5 years of life.

Mucormycosis is a very rare infection. It is caused by exposure to mucor mould which is commonly found in soil, plants, manure, and decaying fruits and vegetables. "It is ubiquitous and found in soil and air and even in the nose and mucus of healthy people," says Dr Nair.
It affects the sinuses, the brain and the lungs and can be life-threatening in diabetic or severely immunocompromised individuals, such as cancer patients or people with HIV/AIDS.

Dr Nair - who works in three hospitals in Mumbai, one of the worst-hit cities in the second wave - says he has already seen some 40 patients suffering from the fungal infection in April. Many of them were diabetics who had recovered from Covid-19 at home. Eleven of them had to have an eye surgically removed. Between December and February, just six of his colleagues in five cities - Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Delhi and Pune - reported 58 cases of the infection. Most of the patients contracted it between 12 to 15 days after recovery from Covid-19.

Patients suffering from the fungal infection typically have symptoms of stuffy and bleeding nose; swelling of and pain in the eye; drooping of eyelids; and blurred and finally, loss of vision. There could be black patches of skin around the nose. Doctors say most of their patients arrive late, when they are already losing vision, and doctors have to surgically remove the eye to stop the infection from reaching the brain.
