izasao sam na momenat iz trokuta sever nigerije-niger-cad. danas i juce sam malo maroko-mauritanija. kolko je ovo apsolutno prelepa, predivna, magicna kaseta u svakom pogledu. barka plovi morem pod zastavom-logom izdavacke kuce

Long drawn out medleys? Check. Âita melodies and structures? Check. Scratchy viola and punchy darbuka? Check. Drum kit, electric guitar and organ? Yes - right there! This swell tape comes from a little stash of tapes that fell into my lap a few months back. All without j-cards and most with only the name of the production house on the cassette shell. This one is from a company called Sawt el Ânq (انتاج صوت العنق). I'm guessing it's from Casablanca, but only because the singer gives a shout out to the soccer teams Raja and Wydad
[blogger knows he's seen that logo before, goes digging around in the stash...]
Well - I knew I'd seen that Sawt el Ânq logo before on an orphaned j-card in the stash. (And a fantastic logo it is, too!) Went looking for it, hoping it would reveal the location of the production house. No luck there, but... the song titles were a match for this tape!! The tape must have bounced around among the Moroccan ladies in the Bay Area for 20 years and then landed back here in the stash where its j-card was waiting for it! Also, my friend Jamal confirms that El Ânq is a neighborhood in Casablanca, so we're pretty sure this is a Casa production.
This is some vintage late 1980s chaâbi. Hope it hits your sweet spot too!

abdou katche katche, hausa iz nigera i velika faca. on i jos dvojica iz benda sviraju gurmi, hausa dvozicanu lautu od tikve sidovnjace, a prateci bend mu ima kalangu bubnje i ovog jednog sto kenjasipa live commentary preko pesme (to hause imaju jako cesto, vrlo popularna fora). dosta razlicito od svega iz hausa repertoara, ovo je neki melodicni freeform folk jamboree i retko dobar snimak za standarde arheologije ove muzike. wallahi le zein blog ima celu neoficijelnu kasetu koju sam proverbijalno izlizao od slusanja prethodna 3 dana.

bogami, ja sam potcenio garba supu i njegovo malo sekularno gudalo. sad mi je ne 'passable / moze da se slusa / OK kao praise singer' vec bas bas odlican. prvo i pre svega zbog raznolikosti opusa: na onom linku sto sam prvo postovao (garba supa kano collections) ima one musave jamboree-je za raju prepune ekstatickim forama na tragu goge majstorija iz nigera koje sam kacio, no ima i jako lepih, skoro pa elegicnih pesama gde postepeno razradjuje temu (tipa prethodno-okacana amarya da ango ili hafsatu, kuturu, itd)

inace osmislio sam standardizovani test. neko ko moze da uziva slusajuci sani aliyu dandawo-a kako meditira 3 minuta "mamman mai mai yona agegi" uz najrudimentarniju instrumentalnu pratnju je definitivno neko ko treba da pruzi sansu hausa praise singing-u.

musa dan bau (najverovatnije iz mesta bafarawa sa krajnjeg severa nigerije, mada realno ko zna). najklasicnija moguca postava - kalangu bubnjevi + prateci hor. fyi, snimak je izuzetno skrnav - audio frekvencije bubnjeva su u totalnom kurcu + ima neki ruzan feedback zvuk koji je sve vreme prisutan, a slika se gubi i vraca throughout the video - ALI ALI ALI - uprkos svemu, ovde se pomalja neka opasna magija izmedju 7-8 i 12-13 minuta (pre nego sto se i ton i slika odsece). niko ne zalozi trenscinu kao mlad wakokin, a praise singing je toliko jebeno zahvalan zanr za high-energy performere.

evo ga 1 klasicni alhaji mamman shata snimak iz 1980-ih na kanabetu kod severnjackog guzonje (privatna praise sesija). objekat hvaljenja je maitama bello - ministar visestruki povratnik, prvenstveno u obe administracije olseguna obasandjoa (i vojnoj administraciji 1970-ih i civilnoj administraciji 1999-2007), a i npr kod shehu shegarija pocetkom osamdesetih. treba im malo da se zagreju, ali u principu u kontinuitetu solidan session. do 31-minuta peva "na gode maitama bello" (hvala ti puno, maitama bello) a posle peva "zaki maitama bello" (lave maitama bello). shata tezgaros, keeping it simple

izvinjavam se sto repostujem ovaj klip sa alhaji mamman shatom, ali ova sekvenca 50:32 do 1:15:10 sa kalangu bubnjevima je toliko spellbinding da zasluzuje zaseban repost.
zasto je ovo toliko super ? prvo i prvo: kalangu bubnjevi AKA talking drums su bubnjevi sa dve glave koji se sviraju sa obe strane i u sredini su vezani gajtanom koji se moze stiskati ili otpustati u samom toku sviranja tako da bubanj proizvodi dublji ili plici zvuk. e sad u konkretnoj sekvenci vec posle jedno 5-6 minuta shata te totalno te nasteluje da slusas samo lagane mikro-promene u visini tona jednog bubnja u ansamblu bubnjeva - sto mu prakticno dodje sustina minimalizma u muzici - ali sa dodatnim twistom: te mikro promene su ponekad tooooliko mikro da daju blago tripozni osecaj, fazon "dal je ovo isti ton zadnjih minut dva ili se upravo pomerio"
i upravo to izmicanje objektivnog tonalnog tla i poigravanje sa percepcijom slusaoca je ujedno i glavna upotrebna vrednost kalangu bubnjeva u npr yoruba & otherwise zapadnoafrickim spirit-worshiping ritualima. talking drums su toliko zahvalna i stosna fora da su maltene varanje u muzici.
