Two arrested over Barcelona attack not the van drivers: police

MADRID (Reuters) - Two men arrested after a van attack in Barcelona which killed at least 13 people on Thursday were connected to the incident but neither was the driver of the vehicle, police said.

Police confirmed that another man who ran over two officers at a checkpoint in Barcelona was shot dead, but added that it did not appear that the incident was linked to the van attack.

The driver of the van which mowed people down on the busy Las Ramblas avenue left the vehicle on foot and did not appear to be armed, a Catalan police official told a news conference.

They said that one of the two men arrested was Moroccan and the other was from the Spanish enclave of Melilla in North Africa. They were arrested in two different towns in the region of Catalonia, Ripoll and Alcanar.

Separately, police said that the van attack appeared to be linked to an explosion at a house in Alcanar in the early hours of Thursday in which one person died and another was injured.

Jebem li ga, sada gledam Google Maps, meni deluje da je to 800 metara u vrh glave. Mada, da ga jebem, uvek je gužva, deluje da je dosta više. Sada više neće biti gužve

Cambrils was second terrorist attack

There was another terrorist attack in Cambrils before five suspects were shot dead, authorities have confirmed.

A spokesman for the regional government of Catalonia said:

The alleged terrorists were in an Audi A3 and apparently knocked down several people before coming across a police patrol and a shoot-out ensued.

Seven people, including one police officer, were injured. The officer’s injuries are not life-threatening but one other person is critically injured and another seriously.

The five suspects were in an Audi A3 car, which was driven deliberately into pedestrians on the seafront in Cambrils on Thursday evening.

Police said some of the attackers were wearing what looked like explosive belts, adding that they were “working on the hypothesis that the terrorists shot dead in Cambrils could be linked to what happened in Barcelona”.

France and Poland trade barbs over EU labour reform

Macron attacks Warsaw’s refusal to drop opposition to overhaul of rules

France and Poland traded barbs on Friday in the latest of a series of increasingly bitter skirmishes over French president Emmanuel Macron’s drive to reform the EU’s labour market rules.

Mr Macron has made overhauling the rules on “posted workers” one of his key objectives and has spent the past three days on a tour of central and eastern Europe in an effort to win support for his plan. The rules allow cheap workers from one country to be posted to a richer one without complying with all local labour rules.

On Wednesday, Mr Macron secured the backing of the Czech and Slovak prime ministers for an overhaul of the rules. However, Poland’s prime minister, Beata Szydlo, said on Thursday that Warsaw, which views Mr Macron’s plans as little more than veiled protectionism, would not drop its opposition to the overhaul.

Speaking at a press conference in Bulgaria on Friday, Mr Macron hit back, insisting that Warsaw would not derail his plans. “Poland is not the country that will determine the direction of Europe. It is a country that today is choosing to go in the opposite direction to Europe on a number of subjects,” he said.

“Poland will not define the direction of Europe today, nor the direction of Europe tomorrow . . . Europe is a region created on the basis of values, a relationship with democracy and public freedoms with which Poland today is in conflict.”

He added: “I don’t think at all that the position of a state which has decided today to isolate itself in the current workings of Europe will damage the construction of an ambitious compromise. On the contrary . . . I am totally confident”.

He also described Warsaw’s refusal to budge on the directive as a “new mistake”.

I advise [Emmanuel Macron] to take care of his own country’s affairs

He said: “The Polish people deserve better and the prime minister will struggle to explain that it is good not to pay Poles well.”

“Europe was built to create convergence, it’s the goals of structural funds that Poland receives,” he warned.

Mr Macron’s attack provoked a furious response from Poland, with Ms Szydlo accusing the French president of “arrogant statements” and a “lack of political experience”, and claiming that in trying to change the rules on posted workers, he was “trying to dismantle one of the pillars of the EU”.

“Poland is a member of the EU, just like France. We have the same rights as France and other member states and will use them for the good of Poland and its citizens. Poland is not in conflict with any member states, nor with the EU itself,” she told the website wPolityce.

“I advise the president to take care of his own country’s affairs, and maybe then he will manage to achieve the same economic results and the same level of security that Poland guarantees for its citizens.”

Poland’s foreign ministry said on Friday evening that deputy foreign minister Marek Magierowski had summoned the French chargé d’affaires over Mr Macron’s comments.

Najtragičnije je što danas postoje političari koji su odgajeni na tim budalaštinama o "zajedničkim vrednostima" i "evropskoj ideji." Rođeni ste kao geopolitički projekat, tako ćete i umreti. Što pre, to bolje.

Hungary has recalled its ambassador in The Hague. The move comes in response to remarks made by the Dutch envoy, in which he compared Budapest's efforts to "create enemies" to those of the "Islamic State" jihadist group.

Blunt remarks by the Netherlands' ambassador to Hungary, Gajus Scheltema, have ruptured relations between the two EU member states and prompted Budapest to take "one of the most radical steps in diplomacy" by withdrawing its ambassador from The Hague.

In an interview published Thursday in the Hungarian opposition magazine 168 Ora, Scheltema lambasted Hungary's unwillingness to take part in the EU's plan to relocate asylum seekers, expressed concerns over corruption and press freedom in the country, and decried the Orban government's campaign against billionaire financier and philanthropist George Soros.

However, what most enraged Budapest was when he drew parallels between the Hungarian government and the so-called "Islamic State" jihadist group.

"Here it is always an immediate search for an enemy," he said, accusing Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban of "creating enemies according to the same principle as globalization losers and religious fanatics."

The interview was published in Hungarian, although it remains unclear in what language it was conducted.

Budapest hits back

Following the interview, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto announced that Budapest would withdraw its ambassador from The Hague and bar Scheltema from entering any Hungarian ministry or state institution.

"Relations at the level of ambassadors have been suspended indeterminably," Szijjarto said.

Hungary's top diplomat described the decision as "one of the most radical steps in diplomacy," adding that he would ask for the Dutch Foreign Ministry's position on ambassador Scheltema's statements. "We won't settle for an explanation behind closed doors," he said.

Hungarian government spokesman Zoltan Kovacs said Scheltema's remarks were "totally unacceptable and impermissible."

"There is no need for such unprecedented statements, neither in bilateral relations nor in Europe," Kovacs said. "We decidedly reject (them) and we expect the Netherlands to take steps in this regard."

Scheltema was reportedly already scheduled to leave his diplomatic post in the near future.

Dutch top diplomat 'embarrassed'

Speaking to reporters later on Friday, Dutch Foreign Minister Bert Koenders admitted that he was "embarrassed" by the ambassador's comments and that "that comparisons should not be made."

"For me, it's clear there is no link between terrorism and the actions of the Hungarian government," he told Dutch news agency ANP. "I can't imagine that this is what the ambassador had wanted to say," he added.

Orban has repeatedly gone head to head with the EU over his hard-line stand on immigration, which he has described as the "Trojan horse of terrorism."
